The MAP Women’s Group is a support group for all female members of Local #25. The group meets on a quarterly basis after work. Its members are strong women, whose experience level ranges from mechanics with 20 years in the trade to recent indentured apprentices with 3 months on the job. We have even had pre-apprentices attend!
Its meetings are lively, and cover various issues of importance. Recent topics have included sexual harassment on the job, gender discrimination on the job, stress relief, and finances. The discussions are often enhanced by guests, such as the two attorneys from Legal Momentum who talked about the legal rights of working women, and the President of NAWIC (National Association for Women in Construction).
Most importantly, the meetings provide participants with the chance to see each other, to connect with, and to support each other through shared experiences. The members provide each other with support, offering suggestions on how to cope with work, family, and problems on the job, and how to effectively relate to peers and supervisors. The confidential environment at the MAP women’s group meetings allows its members to comfortably discuss the many stressors faced by women in the trade.
A memo is sent out a week before each meeting is held. Please check your mail for the next women’s group meeting. Also, please update your mailing address if you have recently moved.
If you have questions or suggestions for meetings dates, topics of interest or announcements, or to update your phone or address, please call the MAP offices at (212) 732-7897, and ask for Angelica Herrera. We look forward to seeing you there!
