What is the Members Assistance Program (MAP)?

The Members Assistance Program (MAP) is a free, confidential counseling service provided to all Local #25 apprentices and journeypersons. The MAP is staffed by licensed social workers who identify and help solve personal and job-related problems apprentices and journeypersons may be experiencing, and is independent from the union.

What can the MAP do for me?

People sometimes have problems that can upset their workday, their home life, and even their health. The Members Assistance Program will help you address such problems as family and marital conflicts, financial and legal difficulties, emotional issues, and drug and alcohol problems. Sometimes people can solve these problems on their own, but often outside professional help can make the difference between stopping a problem cold and going through a long period of struggle and coping, which might prevent you from being yourself at home and at work.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A COUNSELING SESSION?

A counseling session is a confidential meeting between you and a professional MAP staff member to discuss the problem and how best to resolve it. Most problems can be handled in one to four sessions - with hard work by you and the counselor. At the end of these sessions you will either have resolved the problem or worked with the counselor to develop a detailed plan of action to resolve it. This plan may involve referral to a resource other than the MAP, when long term assistance, specialized care, or hospitalization is needed.

What will it cost?

The MAP services are provided at no cost to you. If you and the MAP counselor decide additional resources outside the map are necessary, you will be responsible for any charges associated with the use of these resources. Sometimes your union health plan will cover theses costs. The decision to use outside help is always left up to you.

How do apprentices find out about the program?

The MAP makes apprentices aware of its services through its outreach program. MAP counselors make weekly presentations to each apprentice class at the Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) school, discussing the general MAP services and any specific relevant topics. The MAP presentations take place at a regularly scheduled time to make MAP an integrated part of the apprentices?education.

By informing the members of these issues early in their apprenticeship, this program enables apprentices to approach the MAP as soon as necessary if they have a problem requiring counseling and assistance. It also serves as an introduction to the MAP counselors themselves, which can make both the counselors and the program itself more approachable.

HOW DO I ACCESS MAP SERVICES?

An apprentice can be referred to the MAP for counseling in one of three ways: self referral, mandatory referral from the JATC, or referral from an employer, foreman, or Business Agent. The JATC strongly encourages employers who think an apprentice may have a problem to make a referral. If a case is referred to the MAP soon enough, early intervention may rectify the problem before a situation develops which could lead to the apprentice’s dismissal.

WHY SHOULD A CONTRACTOR WORK WITH THE MAP?

Contractors know that one of the most important assets of any company is its work force. But employees are human, and there are times when employees may experience personal problems that impact their job performance through absenteeism, lateness, low productivity or poor workmanship. The MAP helps contractors by helping employees work through these problems, enabling them to function better as workers.

HOW DOES THE MAP WORK WITH THE CONTRACTOR?

The MAP can provide supervisory training to all contractors?personnel. The focus of this training is to teach foremen and other supervisors how to identify troubled apprentices and refer them to the MAP. This one-hour training session may include, but is not limited to, the following topics:
1. How to identify troubled apprentices.
2. How to accurately document absenteeism and lateness.
3. How to confront problem apprentices.

HOW DO I CONTACT THE MAP?

The MAP staff are available for appointments Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., and may be reached by calling (212) 732-7897. Appointments are scheduled so as not to conflict with an apprentice’s work responsibilities.
